“And what’s the good news?”
I don’t usually reblog stuff like this but
I’ve been saying this about Nook forever.
Everyone is so quick to make him out as some vicious loanshark but the loan he gives you is completely interest-free and there’s no deadline ever, you can basically never pay it back and he won’t even bug you about it
If anything it’s really more like you’re just buying your next house upgrade, not paying off the one you havePoint is Tom Nook is a chill guy and everyone hates him
No wonder he always wears that look of resignationTom Nook appreciation club.
Poor guy, hes got four+ empty houses just laying around, and hes willing to literally accept a pittance and some day work in exchange just to make sure someones doing upkeep on the place. And to top it off some crook selling stolen furniture and paintings keeps sneaking around. And all the good he did for mabel and sabel- he carried their goods until they were an established shop all by themselves.
I like Nook, dangit. He buys whatevers in my pockets because someone, somewhere, wants two crickets and a random sea-shell.
The idea of Tom Nook being a ‘bad guy’ or a ‘loathable character’ is one that just really angers me. At least if Resetti angers you, that means he’s doing his job.
But no, the arguments for Tom Nook being ‘evil’ or ‘shifty’ or ‘a cheapskate’ are horrid, and I just want to tear them apart. Anyone who thinks he charges too much clearly doesn’t know the value of a Bell. 100 Bells have the same value as things you can pick up off of the ground, while the most expensive things he sells range between 3,000 and 4,000 Bells, with very few exceptions.
What’s more, Tom Nook is willing to give discounts to valued customers of up to 20%, as well as free gifts. And, in the Japanese e+ version, you can wake him up after hours to buy and sell things, even though he’s in his pyjamas. Even though he’s clearly annoyed, and charges a little more, it shows that he’s willing to do things for the player if people really need him.
The last argument, about him always giving you bigger debts is stupid. The main ‘quest’ in the game is arguably about paying off the debt. Tom Nook is literally extending a major part of the game for you, while still giving the player rewards. The fact that this comes without any negative influence on gameplay, or obligation to be completed, means that Tom Nook has done nothing to deserve your hate.
